What is horse coaching or coaching with the help of horses?

Horse coaching is a relatively new method used for coaching, training and therapy. A horse mirrors a human's nonverbal behavior. Body language is 85% part of our communication. 95% of it is unconscious. It is driven by unconscious processes such as thoughts, feelings and beliefs. A horse responds objectively to body language and nonverbal communication. Because the horse responds to this, it is able to visualize and respond to this unconscious communication. Often this is the biggest learning lesson for people. Once certain behavior has entered your consciousness, you can reflect on it and possibly change it. The horse will help you change behavior and you receive direct feedback from the horse on the modified behavior. This makes horse coaching a form of experiential learning. The coach is there to help put words to events. In horse coaching, you don't ride the horse. We work from the ground. The horse is usually loose in the paddock and can choose its own path in the actions. The coach, of course, provides safety.

Why are horses good at mirroring people?

Horses are prey and flight animals by nature, living in a herd. It is vital for them to observe and interpret the environment well and live together in a herd context. They have therefore developed a ​​great sensitivity to both the environment and their herd mates. This sensitive alertness allows them to react quickly to potentialële dangers. The fact that horses have the ability to establish and maintain relationships is an effective factor for survival. Both the horse's sensitive alertness and ability to establish relationships allow horses to interact with people. When a horse has no horses around it other than humans, it will embrace those humans as a herd. A horse will always seek contact/be open to it because cooperation offers better chances of survival. A horse will use the same skills in contact with horses as it does in contact with humans. Also, the horse always checks if that person is a good herdmate and where the leadership lies. A herd always has a leader and he will see how the ranks are. If the horse doubts the leadership skills, the horse will take over for itself. True leadership only occurs through honest attitude and good body language.
